The Future is Caregiving is an interactive installation around the idea of caregivers De-robotizing. On the wall, a series of illustrations called “Not a Robot” depict the initial “robotizing” process of joining and working within the Caregiver Program. The light switches in each image allows the viewer to interact with the pieces by revealing the hard truths that lie beneath the surface. In the main space is “Derobotize”, a 3D interactive sculpture which invites the audience to play a role in helping a robot in “de-robotizing”. By writing messages of care on pieces of fabric and tying them to the structure, viewers are asked to show this robot/caregiver solidarity and generosity, to treat them like a human being. Simultaneously guests are asked to reflect about their role in allowing the Canadian Government to maintain such exploitative conditions in the Caregiver Program.
Migrant caregivers have played a huge role in making sure that Canadian families get the care they need. But despite their contributions, their work has not been recognized as real work. Caregivers are among the most vulnerable workers in Ontario and in Canada because their work is tied to their immigration status. Advocating for themselves frequently brings caregivers immediate termination and also carries a serious risk of deportation, reprisal and or workplace violence. Caregivers and migrants workers have fought tirelessly to make sure that both Provincial and Federal authorities create fair laws that can provide them with real protections. Currently the Federal Government is considering changes to the Caregiver Program, and caregivers across Canada want to make sure that these include: the right to become permanent residents when they come to Canada to work and can bring their families, and that Canada stops preventing caregivers from bringing their children on the basis of having disabilities.
