Do you see me? is an interactive Wimmelbook-style illustration by artist and community organizer Kara Manso. Organized in three parts, Do you see me? presents a detailed cityscape comprised of a residential neighborhood, a condominium complex and a community park. In each illustrated environment Manso inconspicuously places several Migrant Care Workers, on whom you are able to click and learn more about. Through these illustrations, Manso aims to demonstrate the invisibility of care work and Care Workers, while also highlighting the valuable, but often hidden, labour they provide in Canadian homes.
Reflecting upon the impact of isolation and the challenges many Care Workers face, Manso has given each Care Worker in Do you see me? a story, mined from her own experience as a former Care Worker and a current organizer with the Caregivers Action Centre. Each story is unique, but echo similar concerns and struggles with being separated from family, poor work environments, and a complex immigration bureaucracy. As you explore these illustrations and stories, Manso asks us to reflect upon the value of Care Workers and their work to support families and the Candian economy.
