FilipiNEXT
July 13-15, 2022, at York University
FilipiNEXT is a transdisciplinary workshop that engages in creative and generative discussions around Filipinx Studies emerging from the Canadian context. Bringing together scholars, artists, activists and community members from all over Canada, the workshop explores the following questions: What tensions, aspirations, and lines of inquiry can emerge when we think critically about the history and future of Filipinx people in Canada? How will the past and present inform what is NEXT for Filipinx Studies in Canada?
The organizing committee is formed by Filipinx scholars from multiple institutions: Dr. Casey Mecija (York), Dr. Marissa Largo (York) and Dr. John Paul Catungal (UBC) are the workshop chairs. Committee members include: Dr. Valerie Damasco (UofT), Dr. Conely De Leon (TMU), Dr. Lisa Davidson (York), Dr. May Farrales (SFU) and Dr. Ethel Tungohan (York).

THE LIVEABLE CITY? WORK
Friday April 5, 2019, 7 PM
Baillie Court, Art Gallery of Ontario
As Impressionism in the Age of Industry takes viewers on a journey through a period of immense change in 19th century Paris, we invite speakers across various disciplines to enter into conversations around urgent issues facing Toronto today: work, affordable housing, transportation, and the cost of leisure.
On April 5, the focus is on precarious labour as Worker’s Action Center founder and coordinator Deena Ladd, senior economist and public commentator with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives Sheila Block, Caregivers' Action Centre coordinator Kara Manso and Toronto Star investigative reporter Sara Mojtehedzadeh discuss the challenges workers face in today's economy.
The Liveable City? series is a partnership between the AGO, Toronto Public Library and the Toronto Star. Join us for the full series of The Liveable City? conversations:

Kara Manso is a temporary worker turned migrant activist turned contemporary artist. The work of the caregiver-as-artist takes its source material from her own experience both as a migrant worker and a migrant activist. Her preoccupation with the “robots” highlights the irony of care workers being treated without feelings within dehumanizing migrant work programs. Last year, when Manso first applied to be part of Mayworks, she used a pseudonym to avoid persecution by her employers. We also exhibited the robot head masks she had created to protect herself and other caregivers during demonstrations for decent work.
Kara Manso brings us The Future Is Caregiving, a series of drawings that documents the present “robotizing” process of the Canadian Live-in Caregiver program. She then invites us to become participants and engage in the future act of “de-robotizing” through an interactive installation.

These bold and beautiful works are brought together for their common thread of migrant activism, their shared investigation of the power of art to empower, express, and create change, and their connection to our deep desire to belong. Following the presentations is a panel discussion facilitated by Monica Gutierrez, featuring Patrick Salvani, Heryka Miranda, Juan Luis Mendoza de la Cruz, and Kara Manso.
